Real Change Depends on an Independent Press

Bay Area Alternative Press (BAAP) is a free and voluntary self-help unincorporated private membership association. BAAP was initially founded in 1982 as an ad hoc committee of labor organizers, community volunteers, printers, artists and writers. In light of growing labor struggles, volunteers saw the need for a program of alternative publications resources to tell the stories of working people and their organizations fighting for material advances. Operating independently from any government funding or policy controls or other funding with strings attached, BAAP is dedicated to the principle that the truth of the political, cultural and economic life of our communities must be told and understood in all its ramifications.

Poor and working people have no access to the mainstream press; the wealthy have it because they own it. We own nothing but our labor. The banks own everything we sometimes say we own, like homes or businesses. And because the wealthy own the media, they decide what goes in it and on it. BAAP is here to tell the other story.
